Hello, beautiful people! Question about outland spousal visa. My girlfriend will study in Canada this year. I heard that if we will get married I can get a work permit and come to Canada with her. But she is 17 y.o. In our country marriage allowed only from 18 y.o. If I will marry her when she will be 18 y.o. can I get work permit then? Does it makes sense where marriage will be registered? (Canada or abroad)

I wish good luck for everyone who read this :)

Way to young to get married so you can get a work permit and join in Canada. You should really consider the implications of this before doing it. Marriage is a huge commitment, and she's only 17.

Regardless, only Canadian PRs and Citizens can sponsor their spouses.

Note that if you get married you will only QUALIFY to apply for an open work permit. This doesn't mean you will be approved. We see plenty of refusals here in cases where the spouse has weak ties to their home country or IRCC has concerns they have plans on remaining in Canada long term.

Also note that your girlfriend must be studying at the post secondary (i.e. university or college) level.

Yes, maybe I write my question wrong, I am sorry. Open work permit is exactly what I need. She will study in college. So, you say it is possible, right? Of course I understand that it is not 100% case and I should have strong ties to my home country

Yes - it's possible to apply once you're married. Just wanted to make sure you understood that approval was far from guaranteed.

If she got her study visa before she gets married, (as single), she needs to update her status and may be get a new study visa approved.

People at this section of the forum don't really know because family sponsorship is for Canadian PRs and citizens to sponsor their spouses to become PR. The OWP is just part of the inland process.

The permit you mentioned may be available for international students. BUT it's better to ask at that section of the forum.
