Is it necessary to submit old/expired passport alongside new one

Hi so today i submitted my passport to our local vfs office after getting my passport request. However, i only submitted my valid passport and not the old/expired one that was attached. The vfs guy said it wasnt necessary and handed it back happily, but im still a bit sceptical..

If the visa office requires it they will just ask for it right? Ive already provided my older passport's details while applying anyway (passport number, exp date etc)

No you don't need to give the old one too. the new one is enough.
