Greetings. I've just started thinking about immigrating to Canada as a skilled worker. I just took the skilled worker "self-assessment test" and scored 74 points. I'm wondering what that score means. Does it mean that I'll definitely get a permanent resident card if I apply? Or am I in competition with others who have more points? In other words, does having an acceptable score mean that I will get my PR, or just that I might get one if I'm lucky? What other factors are in play?

Assume that I pass the physical, the police background check, and the money requirement...and that I scored myself correctly.

Thanks for all replies.

you will get your PR if you pass security, etc, get at least 67 points and fulfill the ministerial instruction requirements (i.e. have at a year of experience in the last year from a list of jobs, studied or lived in canada for a year or have a job waiting for you in Canada).

Its not a competition. They do have an immigration target but don't worry about that, you should just apply.

Even if the pass mark is 67 pts. it doesn't mean that they'll favor you if you score higher than most applicants. The process if reliably fair. But then again, since the system is being run by people and the people run the computers, luck will also play a big role. Just wish that the assessing officer is not having a bad day or the interview officer is not a 'closet' racist.... lol.

Also, there's the element of time. The ministerial instructions may soon change so acting NOW will definitely be an advantage.

If you make 67 or more points and fit one of the 3 categories for FSW, you pass your medicals and have a clean criminal record, you are in. You do not compete with anybody else.
