Hi all! Crazy story here, stuff from the movies to be fair! Not really sure where to go with this or how exactly to go about everything but i do feel the need to share with a group as more heads are better than less and i hope for some solid advice from some of you good kind knowledgeable folk out there!

So here's a brief summary of my circumstance (withholding certain details for privacy purposes, we are public on the internet after all!).

Ok, so i basically discovered last year I have a Canadian born and bread now turned 14 year old kid. I've never been to canada and met their mother (briefly i might add) in Ireland 15 years ago. She contacted me on facebook last year and long story short my child now wants me in their life and I wish to be in canada in their life also.

Parental tests done and confirmed (they're genetically very close to me so that was nearly unnecessary) and I now support them financially from where I'm currently living and working. (London, UK)
I'm Irish and had them visit me here a few months ago. One month of UK and Ireland an amazing and happy experience for all! :)

Here's the issue. Unfortunately murphys law i have some non serious convictions and the indmissible period will be over at the end of this summer, that being 5 years on from last offence (weed possession). Ive already applied for a working visa last year and was refused on the grounds of criminality, I had provided all required legal documents which gave this info. I don't really know for sure what visa I can or should go for and I understand after completing a criminal rehabilitation I'm still not guaranteed entry although most would agree that would be very harsh, immigration are a tough sort!

One would imagine that because I have a Canadian child that wants me there in their life that I would have some better chance than just an average person applying for a visa.
If this is not the case then I think the Canadian government should put better systems in place for such situations.
I am a skilled worker and work with heavy machinery in the construction industry.

As well as the ultimate question of which visa and best way to go about getting one given my circumstances, I would like to aquire a trp or similar to be able to visit for a few days at the end of this month (June) as my child is doing their graduation and would like me to be there for it. Anyone have any knowledge about this process?

This is the family form, this is a family issue, I look forward and thank you all in advance for any and all advice and help and want you to please feel free to ask any questions in relation to this.. M. :)

You may get some information about dealing with your inadmissibility to Canada in this section of the forum.

But there is no current family sponsorship route for you to immigrate to Canada. (with a 14 year old son)

Until he reach the age of adulthood and have 3 years of sufficient income and is willing to be responsible for you for the next 20 years, he won't be able to sponsor you as his parent.

I suggest to deal with you admissibility first and then look into skill worker or economic immigration routes (e.g. Express Entry)

At this time the TRP is your only option for entering Canada as a visitor. Hard for any of us to say if the TRP will be approved. Are you listed on the child's birth certificate?

I would recommend submitting a rehabilitation application as soon as you qualify at the end of this summer. Sooner or later you'll need to go trhough this process and it can take anywhere from a few months to over a year to complete. Once rehab is approved - what kind of visa you go for depends on your intentions. If you want to simply visit - then it would be an ETA. If you want to live here - then you'll need to qualify and apply to immigrate as an economic immigrant (i.e. based on your work experience, education, etc.).

Kind of silly you would be inadmissible for something that Canada is about to make perfectly legal anyways. But anyways, at least it's over with shortly. If Canada's Federal laws on the issue do change soon I'm not sure if you will need to go through rehabilitation process since your reason for inadmissibility would not be justified anymore. But I'm really not sure on this so you can start the process an see what happens.

As for the rest, as mentioned above there is absolutely no advantage to having a child living in Canada as this will not help one bit. There is no Family Class immigration that will apply to you. Unless you re-connect with the child's mom and end up marrying her.

To visit Canada, you hold a visa-exempt passport so would just need an eTA to come visit anytime you want (once inadmissibility is sorted out). Of course as a visitor you can just visit, so can't work. You can also try a TRP (Temp Residence Permit) to overcome your inadmissibility immediately.

I assume the work permit you attempted to apply for was IEC/Working Holiday, so you can try this again once inadmissibility is over. This will give you a 1-year work permit in Canada, but again may or may not help you to immigrate permanently.

To immigrate with PR status, you will need to qualify the same as anyone else through an economic stream (i.e. Express Entry, Provincial Nominee Programs, etc). Having any family in Canada may just help in adding a few points to your profile. You will need to research the various immigration streams to see if your education/work experience will qualify you.

A beautiful daughter in fact :)
And thanks for the answer, I had feared that was the case with a family visa. any suggestions how a super visa may apply here?

Super visa doesn't apply to you at this time. Your child needs to be an adult and working full time before the super visa will be an option.

The child also needs to be an adult before being able to contribute to adaptability points for economic immigration.

Sorry for assuming the wrong gender. :)
