My IEC work permit is expiring. Can I stay in Canada if I apply to extend my stay?
You can stay in Canada if you have what’s called implied status. This means the law considers you a temporary resident until we make a decision on your application.

Who has implied status
You have implied status if, before your work permit expires, you apply:

That actually doesn't help much. IEC is not extendable UNLESS it was issued for less than the appropriate period, due to the passport expiry date. So, the first bullet is misleading to those trying to scam the system by applying for an IEC extension for which they are not eligible.

It helps a lot in the sense that they've formally confirmed you can continue to work as per the first points. One of the biggest debates (even fights) was those on an IEC about to expire and waiting for their OWP through spousal and whether they could continue to work. That was very ambiguous and unclear. This at least has clarified those individuals can continue to work under that circumstance.

Bumping...and including the bottom section of the link:

Who can work under implied status
If you have implied status, you can keep working if you’ve applied to extend your stay in Canada as a worker. However, you can only keep working:

  • for the same employer
  • under the same conditions, and
  • if you stay in Canada
If you applied for a different type of permit, like a study permit, you can stay in Canada under implied status but you can’t keep working.
