I am assuming TRV holders get a on arrival stay of 6 months

I am planning to keep my parents here for 6 months and under.

What's best to do from immigration point of view:

Buy one way ticket
Buy open ticket
Buy a ticket of lets say 3 months and then change the flights extending another 3 months
Should I buy 6 months upfront, but that way the immigration officer will know that they are staying here for the entire 6 months

How long a TRV holder is allowed into Canada is up to the CBSA officer they encounter when they arrive. Some are given the default six month visit. Some are allowed in for a shorter period of time. Generally the officer is looking to ensure TRV holders are genuine visitors and aren't attempting to remain in Canada long term.

As for your question...

The airline won't let them board the airplane to Canada with a one way ticket. So that option is definitely out.

How about I buy 2 one way tickets ?

The objective is while I am looking to utilize the full on arrival stay that they get, I don't know how much its going to be and if its going to be the default 6 months I don't wanna make it obvious that that's how long I intend to keep them.
