Hello,

I'm new to this forum, but figured this might be the quickest way to answer some of my questions. I'm completely new to immigration and have lived in the U.S. my whole life. I'm planning to attend Vancouver Film School in April 2013 and would like to work while in school there. Is it possible for me to obtain student and workers visas? And what would be my first steps?

My girlfriend and I would like to live together while I'm in school, and the program lasts for 1 year. Is this possible? Secondly, she would like to work to help support us while we stay. Is it possible for her to obtain a worker's visa also? I've been thinking of alternatives if she isn't able to easily obtain a work visa, would it be easier if she went to school as well? Then it might be possible for her to work and attend school as well.

Any insight or input regarding our situation would be greatly appreciated! We'd like to get this process started as soon as possible..

Sure - you can attend school in Canada. You will first have to be accepted by the school and then apply for (and obtain) a study permit. Note that foreign students pay much higher tuition than domestic students. Hopefully you've already looked into that and are aware of the high costs involved.

You can work an on campus job as soon as you arrive (on campus jobs are jobs that are located on the grounds of the university or college you are attending). These jobs are typically few and far between - so don't assume you will be able to get one. If you attend a qualifying school, you can apply for an off campus work permit once you have finished six months of full time studies which will allow you to work off campus for up to 20 hours per week. Unfortunately it doesn't look like your school qualfies for an off campus work permit (unless is goes by a different name):

Are you and your girlfriend common law? In other words, have you already lived together for a minimum of one full year? If so, there may be some options available for her to come to Canada with you. If not, then she cannot accompany you and will have to qualify to come on her own through either a study or work permit.

If you have a question, please post it to the forum so that others can respond (there are many questions I can't answer) and so that everyone can benefit from reading any answers you receive.

Thanks.

scylla that was a very good response +1 for that
like scylla has said u can either have a Full time work permit or a study permit(not considering work permit with and after studies). for work permit u need a valid job offer and for study permit u need college or university admissions.
