Hi all,

I am going to be sponsoring my common-law partner, and we are worried about some of the timings! I was hoping someone can answer the following questions:

As a sponsor - am I required to be in Canada when we apply? (I am currently employed in the UK)

When the visa is awarded - how long does the individual have to move to Canada?

Thanks!

I can help with the first part of your question! You don't need to be in Canada to sponsor your partner, but you need to have proof that you intend to move back to Canada. My partner and I sent many letters from friends and family stating that we had plans to move to Canada and we also sent a copy of our Japanese resident visas which were due to expire and stuff like that. I also showed that I had bank accounts and credit cards and stuff. You can search for "Proof of intention to return to Canada" on this forum and there will be many more ideas :)

Good luck!

As stated, you can sponsor while you are abroad as long as you yourself are a Canadian citizen (not just a PR of Canada).
