Interesting. I always thought that once the sponsor is approved, that basically means that the applicant has (perhaps unofficially) been Approved in Principle, since without an approved sponsor, the applicant could never be `eligible'.

The only thing to do after sponsor approval is really criminality/security checks and medical...right?

AIP is a separate step that happens later. Sponsor approval just means that the sponsor themselves qualifies to sponsor (i.e. not on social assistance, etc.). AIP means the relationship and applicant have been reviewed and approved in principle.

Yes, I wasn't totally clear in my post. Until the sponsor has been approved, an application for sponsorship doesn't move at all. Ironically, that's when people can become eligible for MSP in B.C. (if they are out of status). It's the letter that they receive, after sponsor approval, stating that they are now eligible to apply (even though they already have) that makes them feel like things are truly moving...even before the relationship has been confirmed.

From IP 8:

13 Initial stage of approval
If the applicant meets the eligibility requirements (i.e., criteria inR124, taking into account the provisions of the spousal policy), the CPC - M may approve the application pending the outcome of admissibility checks (i.e., medical, security and background).

There used to be a flow chart in IP 8 that showed the entire process. Looks like that was removed as it's not in the latest version (2015-05-15)
