I have a very important question.. What documents need to be translated by a certified translator, and what document don't need to be ? I know that the police certificate from my home country and my birth certificate have to be. But what about letters, cards, etc, written by my mom and friends, and other conversation. Can I translate those myself ?

Only "official" documents need be translated by a certified translator, that should include any notarized letters from family. You can translate all your relationship proof yourself.
