So my wife is sponsoring me under the Inland route, and I am from the UK. We choose Inland over Outland for a few reasons. Firstly, out of fear that my extension for a visitor visa would be denied, and secondly, because my wife is pregnant, and it seems a safer option to get working ASAP, especially with a baby on the way. I did not want to risk being booted out of Canada and missing my child grow, or have the Outland application take over a year, and run out of funds. So I decided to go for Inland, even though it's longer, it just felt safer!

So my question is this: I have looked at a job that I like the sound of, working on a ship that leaves from Cape Breton to Newfoundland. It's seasonal work, meaning you get 7 months a year off work. How does it stand for me to collect EI whilst I am on an OWP and whilst I am being sponsored for permanent residency by my wife? I assume this is allowed, since it is not a government benefit as such, but rather, money I have paid into EI myself? If somebody could enlighten me any, that would be great?

I know my wife is allowed maternity leave, and is still able to sponsor me; but where does it stand where I am concerned?

Thanks for all the help, if anybody has any answers! :)

When I lost my Job I claimed EI and I had no issues at all.

However I don't know if you will qualify for EI as It all depends on your previous job.

What was your job? Still, good to know! The job I'm looking at does seasonal layoffs, so I'm hoping I can claim the EI in the off seasons, and then spend more time with the family!

I worked in IT and was let go from my position but there are several reasons to qualify for EI.

If you already go into the Job and knowing you will be let off so you long you might not qualify as you originally know this is going to happen but I might be wrong..

I think you can apply online and fill in if you qualify or not so you might as well try.
