Hello everyone,

I'm an international student who has completed his Master program, applied for post graduate work permit (open work permit) and also received a job offer. As my post graduate studies was for 1 academic year therefore I will receive a 1 year work permit (PGWP). My query is regarding the extension of work permit;

* If my post graduate work permit is only valid for one year and post graduate work permit can not be extended once issued (as per the CIC web site), is there a way I can extend my work permit without requesting LMIA from my employer, for example: " I can apply for an open work permit by showing IRCC | CIC my employment letter ".

Any person who has been through this situation in the year 2019/2020 or any consultant that can provide me any information regarding the work permit extension options will be a great help, as I am also sharing information with my university colleagues who are also international student and are worried about the one year post graduate work permit. Again any information will be a great help for us.

1. No, for any extension you need an approved LMIA from your employer.

Do companies provide LMIA to their employee's who are on post graduate work permit ? what's your opinion because I heard that companies try to avoid LMIA process as it is a lengthy process.

If you are on a PGWP you are not eligible for a LMIA. LMIAs are a lot of work for an employer. They need to complete a market assessment to show that they couldn’t hire a Canadian and show why hiring you will grow their business. It costs them a $1000 and then takes months to process. If approved you apply for a closed work permit which takes even more months. For many employers it isn’t worth it as they can hire locally.
