Hi Everyone,

Please help me providing me information for the below situation:

I am Male on PR looking to get married soon (Lve Mrg), the girl is on work permit which is expiring in December 2024. We will sign the required paper work in September 2024.
So what are our options to extend her work permit or the next process to maintain status in Canada. Can someone please provide more details and guide us what will be the next steps once we get married here in Canada.

Thanks in Advance

2-3 months after you submit the complete sponsorship application, you will get AOR. Once you have AOR, she can apply for an open work permit. Note that if you happen to be located in Ontario the marriage certificate can take a long time to obtain and delay the submission of your application.

You can sponsor her as Common-Law or married partner... the process is pretty much the same but you guys have to comply with the requirements.

After submitting the sponsorship package you can apply for Open Work Permit... It is possible to apply with/without AOR(which can take up to 3-4 months).

See the details in the link below:

Principal permanent residence applicants

When you apply for your open work permit, you must also be

  • in a genuine relationship with your sponsor
  • included in an application for permanent residence, and have an acknowledgement of receipt (AOR)letter confirming that your permanent residence application is being processed
    • The AOR must be for your permanent resident application. You can’t use the AOR your sponsor received when they applied to sponsor you.
  • living in Canada with your sponsor

Where did you see that AOR is not required for a Spousal Sponsorship?
