Hello all my post is in regards to I am landing next week and driving both my cars (I am driving one, my wife the other) they are both titled as JTWROS and were bought in 2011. My wife is dual citizen and returning to Canada (with me) does anyone know if we will avoid the taxes since they were owned prior to my choice to apply for PR status?

thank you for your help (hopefully)

Yeah you should be able to land with them without oweing taxes. Just remember they must be EXPORTED first and most borders require 72 hours notice before you leave with them. Take care of all of that before you leave otherwise it could pose problems later. Oh, one other thing. They can't have any title liens on them. If they are not fully paid for, you likely won't be able to export them.

Thank you for the helpful mind-easing response, do you have any idea if I just miss an import tax or will I need to still pay HST in Ontario?

In addition the cars will need to get necessary safety upgrades (like daytime running headlights) to pass Canadian safety inspection.

Thanks, have the running lights and the electronic key thing...just glad thought I'd have a 15% of the value tax....woohoo maybe take a trip to Vancouver! :D
