Hi all,

After copious amount of research and speaking to CBSA immigration officers at YVR airport, I have come to the final conclusion of that you do have to stop working after expiry of IEC, even if a BOWP/PR application is in process (despite what CIC hotline agents tell you, as well as some immigration lawyers, who are basically just trying to bend the law).

Now I've heard some people mention that although you cannot work, you do get implied visitor status as you have a different category visa in process at CIC. Is this true?? Surely this is still an implied status. However I have read within the laws that this could be interpreted as true. Or would I need to apply for a visitor visa online before my IEC visa expires next week? I am from a visa exempt country however, so would I just need to exit and come back in?

The annoying this is is that theoretically my BOWP should be issued about a week or two after my IEC expires... And I don't want to confuse CIC by suddenly applying for a visitor visa, when I have a BOWP in process (I've also read somewhere that this is a thing...)

Any help and links would be much appreciated.

Thanks

Did you end up finding a solution to your problem? I am in a similar situation where I'm not sure if I need to apply for a visitor visa before my IEC expires.

I'm still waiting for my invitation to apply for PR, and therefore I cannot apply for a BOWP at this time. As I only have a few weeks left on my IEC visa, I was hoping to know if I needed to apply for a visitor visa before then?

If you don't qualify for a BOWP, then you will need to apply to change your status to visitor prior to your current permit expiring in order to maintain legal status.
