I’m one of the people that did the visitor status extension just to be safe. It took a few extra hours of forms being filled in and $100, but the peace of mind was worth it for me. Just in case.

I had to re-do a few forms since I first stated the application, all for mistakes that would have been picked up at the initial assessment and resulted in the application being returned. You sometimes spend so long looking at the same forms, that they look correct, but you’ve missed something simple.

As I’d missed some things before, I thought there’s a chance my wife and I could’ve done so with our final application package. The visitor extension provided that safety net in case we did mess something up.

In the end, the OWP was approved a little under 3 months after receipt. IRCC is still processing visitor extensions they received in May this year, so it takes a while to get through the volume they receive. I don’t think they even processed mine, there was no need to as my OWP was approved earlier than expected. But I think the time and effort, and $100, was worth it. Just in case.

Let me first apologize to OP for taking over this thread. Sorry! Hopefully everything that has been said helps you in some way though.

As a quick point of reference, at what point did you submit your extension? Well after you had submitted PR/OWP applications (but before visitor expiration)?

Just to jump in here to clarify - the extension request needs to be sent by the last day of your legal status, including that last day. So if your status expires Dec 15, if you send it by and including Dec 15, that will give you implied status even without a decision being made. So then if you were to have to resend your OWP application on, say, Dec 30, it's fine - you have implied status based on having sent in the extension request. And you could totally get OWP approval before the extension decision, it happens.

That's what I had assumed, but now I'm certain. Thanks everyone, super helpful.
