Hello Forum,

I am an international masters student at University of Alberta, Edmonton, Canada. I am graduating in March of 2017(Probably by mid March). I am married and my wife is into her 4th month of her pregnancy. I have my study permit valid till 31 of March 2017 and my wife have an open work permit that expires at the same date. I am planning to apply for my post graduate work permit(PGWP) after my graduation. As I graduate and my study permit expires in the same month I know I will be falling into implied status until I get my PGWP and I am okay with that. Things are getting convoluted from my wife side. She has to leave Canada by 31 March 2017 as her visa expires. By the time her visa expires she will be into her 6 th month of her pregnancy. I want her to conceive here in Canada. The main reason is the doctor who is taking care of her since she is pregnant knows her health condition better than a new doctor back home. Is there any way to make her remain in Canada until she conceive???

Please advice. Thanks you very much for your help.

She can only apply to extend her open work permit if you are already working full time in a NOC A, B or 0 occupation (a job offer isn't good enough - you need to be already working and able to provide a few pay stubs).

Alternatively she can apply to change her status to visitor.

I don't know if the costs of her delivery will be covered or if this is something you will have to pay for on your own.

Hi Scylla,

Thanks for your kind reply. Could you redirect me to some resources where I can find if my wife is eligible for Alberta health care or not.

Thanks.
