At the end of this month I'm going to send in my visitor extension paperwork as I'm currently going through the PR application while being in Alberta. I have an Alberta health care card but that expires in April. Once that is expired I have to wait to get a conformation letter saying my extension was approved before getting another health care card, but here's my question. I'm currently taking medication, but what happens during the time of the implied status? Can I continue to pick up my medication if I have some on file and the doctor's and pharmacists know what's going on? Or am I not going to be able to get medication until I have the new health care card?

If you have a written prescription which allows refills, you may avail of the medications irresepective of the status of your health card.

Also, on the expiration day of your health card please call Alberta Health Services and inform them that you have applied for a new status in Canada...they do not need any proof of application and they will extend your health card for another 3 months. After which, a valid status would be mandatory.
