Hi,

My relative got spouse sponsorship but now he feels that he couldn't live with his spouse and want to separate. As it's just 6 months of him moving here and living together, I want to know what will be impact to his PR status if they get divorced.
It was a genuine marriage, and a lot of proofs were submitted while applying for spouse sponsorship.
Thanks in advance.

Warm regards
Robin

Hi Robin. There used to be a 2 year condition (stating you had to stay together for 2 years to keep your PR) but it was abolished this year. There will be no impact on your relative's PR if he separates from his spouse any time after landing as a PR.

Your relative should be aware that if he meets someone new who is outside of Canada (i.e. not a Canadian citizen or PR), it will be five years from the time he became a PR before he will be able to sponsor his new partner.
