TVO is repeating a special week of programming devoted to Immigration issues in Canada. TVO is Ontario's educational broadcaster, all content is produced as a public service and is commercial free. As well, many people from different immigration forums have commented on our "Voices of New Canadians" video series. We have collected a sample of the comments and posted them to a blog on our website.

It is our hope to show our viewers the forums that are actively engaged in discussing immigration issues in Canada. The Agenda with Steve Paikin is produced by TVOntario, Ontario's educational broadcaster. All content is produced as a public service, and is commercial free.

Hi David,

Thank you for your feedback, this is something maybe for future reference and perhaps its something that can and should be seriously addressed in the future. What do people mean by "Canadian experience". Sadly I am guilty of saying this to quite a few people in this forum. But I dont understand what employers mean by Canadian experience. How does someone new to this country gain Canadian experience in their respective field (field in which they specialized in for many years, have work experience and also a formal education , and have obtained points for through the Canadian immigration system) if we dont give them a chance are we as Canadians:

1) Undermining foreign talent or turning a blind eye to it
2) Socially excluding new immigrants cause we think they are FOBs (Fresh Of the Boat)
3) Dont understand the concept of Globalization
4) Systematically developing a sub-culture of racism and discrimination cause we value our Canadian degrees and work experience
5) Extremely conservative in our way of thinking and fear change in socio-economic context

It may not come to you as a surprise David that recently as a couple of months ago, CBC came up with an article which questions why we don't see more ethnic minorities as CEOs or director level positions in the public/private sector. The conclusion of the report was there are lack of opportunities for visible minorities to make it to the top. Which is why we see many overqualified people of color doing bottom of the barrel jobs.
This is something we need to consider very seriously, do we really celebrate multiculturalism for namesake or are we practicing what we preach at a more grass roots level. The question is up for discussion
