Thought I would post on this subject because of a some of the questions I have seen on the forum. I must say that I used a lawyer to handle my files not that I couldnt do it my self because I could and with plenty of information on the legal side I could have, but I felt that someone who had done this process several times would have been able to navigate any complexities that arose. For instance I am a canadian citizen living and working both in the USA and the Caribbean have not lived in Canada for Several years my wife is a US permanent resident I have a son who is a full time student at a university in the caribbean with the complexity of the case I was glad that I consulted with an attorney because I had filled out the paper work and was ready to file on my own but when the lawyer started to asked me some questions that I had not thought of and would have struggled to provide the right answer to I was glad I did.
I believe all though you dont need an attorney, sometimes in complex situations because of the amount of cases that they have filed and the experience that they have had doing them its better to go with one and let them deal with the headaches that can come up some times.
