Can anyone tell me whether you really need a lawyer/imigration consultant to process your application and does it effectively help to hire one ?

There is no need to do it. If you know everything about applications yourself it won't help. Obviously if your knowledge is limited or you make mistakes, it will help, as they can guide you and correct you.

If you are going to use a consultant, the trick will be to know in advance whether s/he is any good, because after you've paid your money it is too late to change your mind.

There used to be a poster on this forum -- rjessome -- who had lots of practical knowledge, an who qualified as a consultant. Look for her previous posts and contact her, is my suggestion.

The difference between an immigration lawyer and an immigration consultant is about $1000 LOL.

not all lawyers can be trusted. there are some individuals who lose interest to a case once they receive the money. actually using them can slow down your application too, as all the correspondence your visa office will do through them.
