I was not sure which topic area this question best fits, so please let me know if should post somewhere else. I am a US Citizen based in Detroit, MI, and I have wanted to immigrate to Canada for many years. I have been unsuccessful in obtaining employment and/or sponsor with a Canadian-based employer (I've had a couple of interviews of the past several years).
With my current job, I am able to live anywhere in North America, and I travel frequently for business in Canada, as well as visiting my family (my brother is married to a Canadian). Are there any options for me as a US-based employee to simply move to Canada, given that I already have employment with US company? Is that even possible, and is there any type of Visa I could obtain so that would me to stay for an extended period of time? (beyond the standard 6 months for US Citizens). If I pay Canadian Income Tax on my own (filing), while residing in Canada, could I apply for residency? I am hoping there is at least some option for someone who doesn't have visa sponsorship, but is gainfully employed. I realize I would be subject to World Tax with US (after Exemption) and Canadian Income Tax is based on residence, but I really want to move to Toronto, and eventually apply for permanent residency so could be eligible for Residence benefits.
Thanks,
Mark
