IMM5540 Question 4 - Mother's family name

This might be an obvious question, but on IMM5540 (Question 4) under Mother's Family Name - does anyone know if that essentially means maiden name, or current family name?

Your mothers maiden name i.e the one she had before she was married.

That you should verify. I put my mom's married name. Usually your family name is the name you use currently, and if they want a maiden name they will specify, or will say name at birth. I know it specifies this at some point in the application for the sponsor themselves.

This is a spousal sponsorship application (I'm the sponsor) but I don't think it asks for any additional information about my parents identities though elsewhere in the app.

What about on IMM5406 Additional family information?

IMM5406 is a document for the applicant (my wife) where as IMM5540 is a sponsor document.

True, clearly I am tired, it's been a long day

Your mothers maiden name i.e the one she had before she was married.

My reason for this statement is that on my sponsors (My wife) form, my wife's mothers maiden name is shown.
After a quick discussion, the follow information comes to light - Note that in Quebec women who get married do not always take a married surname.

In Quebec now, they are legally not allowed to take their married name.

On my application, all I can say was I put my mom's married name, as that is her current family name. It didn't ask me for her name at birth or her maiden name. This is all I can say. I am the sponsor in my case by the way.

I think it means her current family name. On my application I put her current family name, and then in brackets wrote her maiden name.

I did the same thing, current current family name and in brackets the maiden name. My mother was married in PQ many many years ago.

I am stuck on this as well.. The guide really should specify. HMmmmm.
