He really has very few options.

Applying for a work permit isn't possible. He would need to be in Canada legally in order to do that. The same applies for applying for permanent residency through an economic immigrtion program like Express Entry. That's not possible either.

The single option he has available is to apply for refugee status. This is a long process (expect 2-3 years) and it only makes sense to apply if he has a very strong case.

And if mortar shilling by indian army was firing on his house then?

Yes if they can prove that they have been personally effected yes but one of the requirement for asylum seekers is to move to another region of their own country to seek safety before seeking asylum. Many get refused because they have not tried to move to a safer region. You have also no explained how your friend entered Canada. Moving takes some organization so if it can be shown that the plans to enter Canada has been going on for a while that will also effect his chances. In this case the situation in Kashmir has recently gotten more unstable although there have been issues in the region for a little no time.

Maybe clarify that passport is with Canadian airport or government given that implies was confiscated for some reason .

Plus you say he left the airport without the passport so is he in Canada already or not given the thread seems to be a bit confusing with previous post referring to a transit visa .

Did he try to claim asylum at the airport? If so, CBSA would have seized his passport then.
Why do you think that he is an "illegal" immigrant?
