Its not needed, although im wondering if one can earn cheap points from it??

Well havent heard of it.
So IELTS is for Principal Applicant.

You can always clear your doubts by going through the CIC guide etc.

Well, in OP6 it is mentioned that no additional documents which are NOT mentioned on the checklists should be taken as a positive fact to improve the quality for certain immigration case, except principal applicant work experience documents .
However, it is not forbiden to send IELTS for all your family members if you have the money and time for that. No points will be awarded for your spouse IELTS. One more thing is, that in the case of rejection, all original IELTS copies stays with CIC.

I think they should change that like Australian immigration did and award few points for spouse language proficiency.

I hope they stay with their current rule that IELTS is for principal applicant only. IELTS exam and review fees are additional financial burden.

Yes I know, it wouldnt be good for
CIC to say that IELTS for spouse is a must, since expenses are already high anyway, but it would be good if they say that additional points will be awarded in the case when spouse has good language skills and is willing to take the exam if wants and can pay for it.
