IELTS for Americans

I'm an American in the process of applying for permanent residency via common-law sponsorship. I never thought twice about having to take an English proficiency exam until I read that some native English speakers had to take the IELTS in order to apply for the skilled worker program.

Would I have to take the IELTS to apply for PR(common-law sponsorship)????

If someone could answer this it would be greatly appreciated!
