Are you able to work as a sub contractor on an hourly rate on a 2 year Iec open visa? Or do you have to be employed on wages?

You can do whatever you want.

Why isn't it stated on the cic website? It just keeps saying you can work for any employer? Sub contracting makes you technically independent? Are you allowed to be independent on that visa?

Not if you properly file taxes. You still have to file taxes as a subcontractor.
Thanks for you reply. I have been trying to contact immigration for days but they keep hanging up on me. I just don't know if I need something in writing to say that I can work as a sub contractor. But lots of people do it obviously you just have to do your tax correctly?

Any employer includes you being your own employer. :)

No if you are employed as a sub contractor for a company, basically it means you are working for that company but as a temporary employee and also you would be paying taxes on your own whereas for a full time employee, the company pays the taxes. You will still receive a Tax slip from the company you are subcontracting for.

And since its a IEC open work permit, you can work for anyone including yourself.

I understand that and I believe you and I'm so happy that I can but can you please tell me where you got that information from? I need to show the company that I will be working for.. They want to make sure they won't be up for anything later if we aren't allowed to do our own tax

Under the International Mobility Program, an open work permit enables a person to work for any employer for a specified period of time. An open restricted permit may restrict the occupation or location but not the employer.

Working Holiday participants
Your work permit should show:

  • “open” employer, and
  • “open” location.
Open employer and employment location means you have an open work permit.

As long as your work permit is valid, there are no restrictions on:

  • how long you can work, or
  • how many hours you can work.

Young Professionals or International Co-op (Internship) participants
Your work permit should indicate the name of your employer.

You can work only for the employer specified in your work permit. The employer’s name is based on the offer of employment submitted.

Thank you very much! That's exactly what the permit says. Can I just ask why doesn't it just say on the website that you can sub contract. Because we don't want to start a business we just want to do the work cause it's a trade and thats usually how you get paid. I'm just really scared at tax time they are gonna say you can't work like that cause they can't control the tax side of things like you would if you were employed. We do our tax like this all the time we just want to make sure we are doing the right thing in this country

There are two ways subcontractors work. One, they can just work on their SIN or they can open a business. You can just work as a subcontractor using your SIN. No issues for taxes wise but it would your responsibility to report your income and pay the taxes required

Can I ask how you know the answers to these questions? Have you done this before?
