Hey,

I was hoping someone could help me with the following 2 questions. I've tried getting in touch with immigration and tax offices but I can't get a person on the phone.

Just a quick summary on my status:

I've just moved to Vancouver on a 2 year IEC Visa. I've kept my job in the UK and I'm currently being taxed there. I have 2 questions:

1. Is there any reason I wouldn't be allowed to be taxed in the UK while on this Visa? Everything I've read in threads on other forums say that it's fine, but I can't see anything in the fine print of the IEC visa to say yes or no either way.

2. If I was to switch my pay to be taxed in Canada (which I'm happy to do, and so is my company), would that be usable in any way towards PR status for any streams to PR? I believe that it must be a Canadian based company, but just wonder if it could be used for another company.

Thank you to anyone who can perhaps give me some guidance here.

Brian

1. Can't answer that question. You may be better off posting this question to a UK tax forum.
2. Regardless of whether you are paid in the UK or Canada, you will be required to file Canadian taxes for this income since you are living in Canada. No - you won't be able to count this experience as Canadian work experience to give you more points or allow you to apply for PR through the Canadian Experience Class program. To count as Canadian work experience, you must be working for a company that's physically located in Canada and your job must be based in Canada.

Wow, that was fast! thanks Scylla.

I'm clear on point 2. On point 1, all is fine on the UK tax side, they don't care where I work from, it was more so does the IEC visa care where I work from if that makes sense?

Thanks.

IEC visa doesn't care where you work or you are paid. You are good either way.
