Hello, my wife (American) and myself (Canadian) have just sent in our sponsor application for permanent residency (inland) and today I find myself confused more than ever about the proccess. Maybe it's because some of the information is out-dated, but I was under the impression the sponsorship would take no more than a year, and my wife would be able to work after the first stage approval (which I thought was around 3 months.) from what I'm reading today we should have gone the Outland route, which seems to be much faster. I have a few questions hopefully someone can help me out? 1. What's the benefit of applying inland over outland? 2. If I apply Outland can my wife still live with me in Canada on a visitors visa? 3. Is it possible to cancel my inland application / get a refund since we only sent it in 3 days ago? We have many more questions but let's just start with these ones!

For U.S. citizens I can't think of an advantage to applying inland rather than outland although the open work permit is surely a benefit. Another benefit would be that the applicant can remain in Canada throughout the entire PR application process. The flip side of that is a big con - the applicant must remain in Canada throughout the entire PR application process, or at least if s/he does leave and is not able to re-enter Canada, s/he forfeits the application. Again, being from a visa-exempt country, Americans are usually allowed to visit Canada for a period of 6 months and some people choose to come to Canada early to "wait out" the process at Buffalo which takes 11 months or less for 80% of cases from the last 12 months' data. You don't need to actually be out of the country to apply as "outland," but you HAVE to be inside the country to apply as "inland." If you want to cancel, I would call the CIC Call Centre and ask about the way to do this. I've heard from another person that they received all the money back, although it took 2 months to withdraw the application. Hopefully it won't take that long for you since it appears that it just arrived at Mississauga a few days ago and likely no one has begun examining the sponsorship portion.

By the way, I'm pretty sure that for inlanders, "step 1" (which is the sponsorship approval) IS about a year, and that Open Work Permit is NOT issued before that. I don't know how many months step 2, which is the portion examining the PR applicant, usually takes.
