Hi,

I am an international student studying in Toronto. I recently misplaced my Indian passport and applied for a new one. However, the study permit that was issued to me on entering the country has my old passport number mentioned on it. Is this gonna be a problem for me? To be noted, that my current passport has it mentioned that old passport has been reported lost.

I am planning to travel to India for a vacation and plan to return back to continue my studies. Will this be an issue for me?

Seriously? You need to get your new passport stamped. Your college/uni should have an international center with advisors who can help you with getting this fixed. And you need to get it fixed fast.

Its compulsory to have visa stamp on your passport at the time of arrival because border security people scan your passport for their record. They can't let you enter on behalf of your study permit only.

Hope this much info helps you :)

Hello,

Sorry to hear about you loosing your passport. Well, you needn't panic. However, yes you need to get issued another study/work permit and don't worry the fee is not going to be the same as 150CAD. it's going to be 30 CAD for lost passports.
You have already got your passport issued now so I am sure you have already reported the incident to the local police about loosing your passport.

You can apply online or via mail (recommended is online).

As said earlier, you needn't panic about it, just follow the simple process and yes do get your study permit issued again.

Now there are couple of things I wanted to ask/clarify;

1. CIC website doesn't talk about lost study permits but does have information about lost work permits or PR cards which I believe has same principles;

http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/helpcentre/answer.asp?q=175&t=17

2. Your college will surely have information about lost study permits, so don't worry just walk to the International Students Counselor and he/she will let you know the information.

3. Fee I mentioned above ( the source is couple of colleges website where they have mentioned information about lost study permits)

4. I would like to know which college and program you are enrolled in and what's the current status of your study (how much study is left, do you also have OCWP)

Cheers!

Thanks everyone!

@sabby: Well my college said that i need not worry about reissuing a study permit and could directly apply for extension of study permit once it expires in march. As for the visa.. i do have it stamped on my new passport.

My passport clearly states "Passport no XXXXXXXX reported lost". so i doubt my study permit should be affected.

????

Buddy, I would say, you better write an email to CIC. As said earlier, CIC didn't mention anything about lost study permits. Read my last message, for the lost work permits, one needs to get it reissued. Now, for study permit, better write an email to CIC and even if you have to, it's just 30 CAD buddy... so call is yours now.

Cheers!

Yes you got me right. My main worry is about the passport number on the study permit. I have the original study permit with me.

Yes you can travel without any problem. I am not a lawyer but i will give you geniune answer. Your have Canada visa stamp on your new passport and as you said earlier you have message on your new passport that old passport number####### is lost, you are good to go. Just want to crosscheck one thing new visa stamp is having multiple entries or single entry?

it's a multiple entry visa.

As of my knowledge you should not be having any problem :-)

My bad, i didn't notice this part earlier. Yes, you should be all good to go.
