I am a student and my husband is on an open work permit

My husband and I are on a full time student visa and open work permit. At the bottom of his visa it says "remarks/observations: accompanying spouse of student who must be attending full time." we have been having a hard time with our relationship and I have failed 3 courses (passed 6 of them, so I am 3 out of 9 failed) and I was recently considering getting a divorce and going home but he wants to stay and someone mentioned our visas are linked. If I leave will his visa expire (its still good till Nov 2018)? If so, how long can I go on vacation to the US for without it expiring? He is a full time worker who is technically a manager of a department and wants to make a career out of the job and they have said they are willing to sponsor him. What would be his best option if it would expire because I do not want to stay more than 2 more months. Also I am US and he is UK citizens if that makes a difference. Also how long can I not be in school like take a break from it on my visa?

His work permit remains valid even if you separate and leave Canada.
