How to stay in Canada after Work permit expiry?

Hello Everyone!!

My friend completed his Masters program and got open work permit for one year. But he is not able to find a job since he don't have enough experience in his field. His work permit and visa expires in January 2014. Just need you humble suggestion and help here. Can you please let us know if there is anyway that he can extend his stay in Canada without a job? Please your help is much appreciated. I cant see his face as he started counting his final days in Canada.

He only has a few options:

1) Apply to change his status to visitor (no guarantee it will be approved). He won't be allowed to work in Canada as a visitor.

2) Find an employer who is willing to offer him a job and can also obtain an approved LMIA. Then apply for a closed work permit.

There is an option beyond canada to stay after expiry of work permit. It depends what was his field of study and degree? There are couple of options he may explore.

But i heard after finishing masters program, student can directly apply for pr, no need job or job letter. Thats in ontario.
