Hi,
My work permit expired on Feb. 02, 2014 and I left Canada on Feb. 11, 2014 via road to US since I recently became a US Green Card holder. I am not sure how to contact CIC to let them know that I have left Canada otherwise they might think I am still in Canada and overstaying on my work permit.

I tried the call center number from the CIC website but it doesn't work from US.

Thanks in advance for your help.

No need to inform CIC.

Thank you for your quick reply but if I don't inform then CIC might send me notices thinking I am still in Canada and it might also affect my Canadian experience class PR application.

I am still confused :-\

They wont send you any notice. They assume you had left as at when you should leave.

and you have your passport stamped and dated at the border when you exited canada, right?if so, then that's enough proof that you left the country for future reference...c",)

I came to US via road from 1000 Island Border crossing and I was only stopped by the US customs. Canadian border authorities didn't scan my passport etc. Although, I have a stamp on my passport from US border authority that I was admitted in US on Feb. 11, 2014.

I am also curious how does CIC find out if a person is still in Canada after their work permit expiry?

As far as I know, CBSA don't stamp passport when exiting...if it becomes an issue during proof of residency...reliance is placed on the stamp of the country that you entered. If that is not enough to establish it, the CCTVs are always there to rely on. And I dont see why someone should stay longer than the permitted period as this could have negative impacts on ones immigration record.

It as been said that effective June 1, they will start monitoring exit movement.

If you still need to call to be sure, call this number +1 613 944 4000 and then follow the instructions to get to CIC.

Then it is only someone that has a removal order that must notify CIC when leaving Canada, otherwise, the person is deemed to still be inside Canada.
