I've searched this site, and the CIC site trying to find out what to expect when applying for a multi-entry TRV. I've seen references on this site to 2 or 3 years.

Is there a "typical" number of years? Is it possible to ask for a five year validity?

I'll be applying for this visa in Kiev, so would be particularly interested if anyone had experience with it there.

Edit: Finding a little more info as I look around:
CIC in Canada: 5 year maximum
UAE Embassy: 3 year maximum
Jordan Embassy: 18 months maximum.

Seems that the validity period is dependent on location. What would it be for Ukraine?

I have seen people getting 1 to 3 years validity of the multiple entry TRV. I have not heard of the 5-year multiple entry though.

I agree. the maximum you can get is 3 year multiple entry to Canada. unlike the US that can give you upto 10 years!

You may agree, but you are wrong. See: http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/resources/manuals/op/op11-eng.pdf

"A multiple-entry visa:
• has a maximum validity date of up to five years or one month prior to the expiry date on the
passport/re-entry visa, whichever is earlier."

PMM

PMM: thanks for the link. It is good information for what we are planning.

thank you for the correction PMM, I didn't know that, maybe mostly because it's so rare to get a 5 years one!
thank you again

how many days is one allowed to stay during a year on multiple entry visa?

Still depends upon the officer at POE. Normally 6 months is given. Only difference is you can leave then come back again within the validity of the multiple TRV. But coming back too soon, the officer might put a cap on the visit.

thank you for your reply, job_seeker. do you know if it's possible to extend 6 months stay given on the POE having multiple entry visa?

I think so, as long as the reason for the request for extension is a valid one. I've seen posts of extension requests being granted to as much as a year.

thank you again. it definitely needs to be a special reason for having it extended for such a long time. is it possible to ask for such an extension or it's totally up to them to decide how much to give?

I told them I wanted to stay with my wife and asked for 6 months, and they gave me 1 year. I don't know why, as there was no comment on this. I just received my extended status document in the mail which was valid for an extra year.

thank you again for your reply, as I understand there's no limit of days to stay in Canada in visitors status, if they can extend it for a year.

In theory they can keep extending you forever, but in reality they are unlikely to do so. :) This is where they exercise discretion.

My sister in law, is living in Pakistan and want to visit her canadian citizen son in Toronto for a year on visit visa. She stays at home and does not work .
Canadaian embassy in Pakistan denied to give her a visit visa for canada twice, without telling any specific reasons. Now whe is thinking to visit Toronto by getting a Multi visit visa from Pakistan and go to an other country, like usa/uk and then from there to visit Toronto. But I and she does not know how to apply/get a Multi visit visa from which embassy, from USA,UK,Sweedan ???
What are requirements to apply and get a Multi visit visa to visit USA or UK or Canada via USA /UK ???
Her son can show proof of support for a Multi-visa.
