Hi there,

I am a postdoc in Waterloo. My contract here is 2 years and I have been here for more than a year. Some of my friends said that I can apply fro PR after one working year. Is that true? Anybody has any official link about this information. Please help me.

Thank you so much!

Cheers,

NL

This rule was in effect couple of years back when there was an option for applying under federal skill worker 3 category. Now, you need atleast 1 year of continuous experience, gained in the last 10yrs from the current NOC, and gain 67 points to be eligible to apply.

Hi Mitali,

Thank you so much for answering my question. However, I could not find the information you gave me about the working time and point (67) in the website. So, I should apply for "Canadian experience class"?

Again, thank you very much.

Cheers,

Hi NL, the only way that I can see you being eligible for is the CEC for foreign workers. I think the requirement is that you have to have worked the equivalent of 2 years of full-time work within the last three years (so at least 3,900 hours).

The most important thing is, you can only claim a MAXIMUM of 37.5 hours per week, so even if your contract states you work more per week, they will only count up to 37.5 hours per week. For example, if you work 40 hours per week for 100 hours, you will NOT have 4,000 hours (40x100), but rather, only 3,750 hours (37.5x100), thus 150 hours short. I think the CEC forum has a lot of information regarding this.

Since your contract is only two years, it may be a bit tricky and borderline, but I think it should be fine, just make sure you get the required number of hours, and it should go through. So to fulfill the requirements, it does look like that you need to have worked ALL the 104 weeks of your contracts, regardless however many hours you actually work.

Also, did you get your PhD in Canada? If you got your PhD from a recognized university in Ontario, then you can probably apply under the Ontario PNP stream, but only if you graduated within the last two years.

Hi Mitali and Asbereth,

Thank you very much for answering my question with very kind consideration. I will check careful my status but I think I should prepare my document ASAP, even the requirement is 1 or 2 years. For asbereth: I got my PhD in Japan, but staying 1 year longer in Canada is not a very big problem for me.

Have a great weekend!

Cheers,
