Hi everyone,
I have a question on behalf of a friend. How can we convince an employer to sponsor an LMIA if the employer is not familiar with the process? Is it okay for us to explain to the employer what they need to do to apply for the LMIA?

My friend wants to help the employer understand the steps, but we’re not sure if it’s appropriate or how to do it effectively. Any advice or tips would be really appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Note: My friend is currently working in a youth centre in a small town here in Ontario, and her PGWP expires on August 17th. Without LMIA , she cannot work and I feel sad for her because she has 2 dependent children that who are studying in a University. Unfortunately, the other dependent , she will be turning 22 this July 2025 and she is no longer dependent. They apply for an express of interest - OINP last November 2024. Well there is no draw and this April I think , she applied for Express Entry, unfortunately she is overage but she is studying french right now.

Just tell them to go on the IRCC about how to hire a foreign worker. They need to understand the process. First step, employer must post the job on job bank and other sites and start the recruitment process. Need to show that no Canadian or PR has the education, work experience and language skills to do the job. The youth centre must meet eligibility requirements and should be high wage.

Realistically it is probably too late for the employer to get an LMIA before her WP expires. Many municipal services won’t apply for LMIA and pay for the process. Would suggest they speak to the HR department and bring up the fee and timeline associated with LMIAs. Given the timeline for LMIAs and WPs the youth centre will likely need to hire someone else to replace your friend in August.
