Hi,

how do I call CIC. The number 1-888-242‑2100 on the CIC website leads only to the computer where you get infos and stuff. How do I get an agent on the phone. What am I doing wrong?

You have to go through the options - I know it seems like they go on forever. If you go on and on, eventually you can get to a person.

If you tell us which area you want, someone may know the keys to hit so you don't have to listen (or at least pay attention) to the whole recording.

Or ask us your question. Many "seniors" here are more knowledgeable about immigration than CIC Call Centre agents. (To be fair, I don't think they are trained very well or given good job resources.)
 
My common law partner is sponsoring me. I have some question to certain forms as well as general questions that I would love to ask an agent. I dont get it, where do you get to in agent in the CIC call center menu?

e.g.
1. certified true copies only of documents in foreign language, yes, no?

2. We want to use some received letters from different companies in a foreign language to show that we lived in the same place. Do these letters need to be translated? It shows the name and address on the top and that's universal and all that matters I believe.

3. how do you use extra sheets of paper for additional entries. I just printed the page that is needed multiple times. I feel like people do it differently. If I print out the certain page multiple times do I have to add my name and stuff at the top how it says it in IMM 5996? IS there a golden way of doing this?

4. Background-slash-Declaration IMM 5669, do I really not sign the bottom part of the application as well?

and a few more question...

1) Only for originals - .I. e., birth certificates, marriage certificates, etc. Items such as letters, cards, you can translate yourself to supply.

2) I would translate it myself since the requirement here isn't a original true translation.

3) Personally, I wrote an "additional information" statement. I titled it "Additional Information" then header: IMM XXXX. Then listed question number followed by my statement.

Example:

IMM XXXX

1) {Entry}

4) {Entry}

7) {Entry}

I only included questions requiring additional information. I put all the forms into one document. It was 3 pages long.

4) You will sign that at landing with the CBSA agent or IO that does your landing. You will swear the information is true and has not changed (this last part is a big one) before signing. If you've had any changes to your family structure, do not sign until the form is correct.

@Vats: I actually talked to an agent today. so happy, he was pretty nice and answered a lot of my questions. ps the phone menu is a bit different now. but i made it :)

@amikety: thanks for the detailed answer. I think I'll do it like you did with the additional documents. They agent seemed to kinda agree with the self translation or even leaving it in a foreign language when its just to prove the address.

I know you're putting a lot of trust into the Call Centre - here's some unsolicited advice.

Call Centre employees aren't trained very well and/or don't have the resources to properly answer a lot of questions. You can call and ask the same question to 3 different workers and often get 3 different answers. Anytime you have a question, I would verify by asking other sources too, whether that's forum, immigration lawyers/consultants, or people you know in your life that have done immigration too.

Call centers in general barely get three days training anymore before getting to work. I can tell you, I've been active here for six months and I'm just starting to feel somewhat useful! It's a lot to learn. Just be on the safe side. Get a consensus. It won't hurt anything.
