Hello

We are getting ready to apply for the PR. Im a Colombian citizen married to a Canadian and we are wondering if there is any way for me to visit Canada before I get my PR. 18 months is a very long time and it seems crazy that we would have to wait that long.

Is there anything we should do in the application process that might help us speed up the process?

I got rejected for a visitor visa before and they said it was because of weak ties. Which kind of ties do I need to prove I have?

Thanks

You can ask in visitors forum...

Spousal sponsorship is a 2 step process. The first is your spouse (Canadian citizen or PR) applies to sponsor you. Once this stage is approved, the case is transferred to the local visa office (if it is outland). It is this second stage that is longer.

If you apply for a visitors visa before the first stage, there is a high risk that you might overstay your visit and live here illegally if your PR application is denied for some reason. That is why a lot of people get rejected for visitors visa. On the other hand, if the first stage is approved, it is more likely that the second stage would also clear without any problems. So if you apply for a visit visa after the first stage, you are more likely to get it.

As regards weak ties, it relates to ties to your home country. "How likely are you to go back to your home country after the visit visa expires?" "Do you have a job to return to?" "Property that belongs to you back home?" etc.

things to speed up the PR may include
1) fill the forms properly and don't leave blank space, Be complete and accurate
Complete all sections. If a section does not apply to you, write “Not Applicable” or “NA”. If your application is incomplete it may be returned to you and this will delay the processing of your application.
2) show a strong proof of relationship
3) pay all your fees upfront total with spouse with no dependant is 1040 CAD.

Factors that may delay processing

missing signature on application forms
missing documentation
unclear photocopies of documents
documents not accompanied by a certified English or French translation
verification of information and documents provided
a medical condition that may require additional tests or consultations
a criminal or security problem
consultation is required with other offices in Canada and abroad

For the visit, you can try it again but you have to show that you have a connection back to your resident country, like a job, a home, a business ...etc and show that you will leave upon your expiry of your visitor's visa.
The difficulty of getting a VISA also greatly depends on your current citizenship, many wealthy countries such as those in the middle east may be get Visas easily while many countries who have a high number of asylum seekers , refugees or having high number of overstays are much likely to get a difficulty with Visitors VISA.

Thanks for all your help guys. I appreciate it.
