I am a 56 year old brazilian engineer working in Oil exploration. I got a PR in 2010 after a two year successfull application on Federal Skilled Workers Program. For personal and professional reasons I did not move to Canada. It did expire in 2016. I was there 5 times but no more than 3 weeks.
My daughter went for a 5 month term in high school THIS YEAR. Curiously, I got an eTA for her (as a tourist). We bought tickets to visit her in december. I applied for 3 eTAs: my wife's came in 15 minutes. Mine and my son's were denied due to "permanent resident status".
What can I do? Shall I apply for Travel Authorization or not? I wouldn't like to renounce to PR status and I DEFINETELY WOULD LIKE TO REGAIN THAT STATUS AND LIVE IN CANADA. Our trip is scheduled to mid december.

Given you have failed the residency obligation if you apply now for a PRTD it is likely your PR status will be revoked.

So you could assuming you have a US visa go via the US land border but is also likely that there you would be reported for failing the residency obligation leading to PR status being revoked. Even if you were not reported you would need to stay in the country for 2 plus years to reset the RO.

If you want to visit in December seems your only choice is to renounce your PR status and apply again for an ETA. If you want to move to Canada you would need to apply again from scratch although at 56 without a job offer age is probably against you now.

Cannot explain how your daughter got an ETA given that application should have failed as well if she were still a PR. Is she attending high school as an international student where fees could be involved or as a PR or some sort of exchange program

Your options are extremely limited given you are traveling in December and do not meet the residency requirement. They are:

1) Renounce PR status so that you can qualify for an eTA. This is the only option that will allow you to fly to Canada directly.
2) Fly to the US and then try to enter Canada through a land border using a private vehicle (e.g. rental car). Re-enter Canada using your COPR / expired PR cards and hope you are not reported for failing to meet the residency requirement. If you are reported, you will end up losing your PR status officially. If you are not reported, you will need to remain in Canada for 2 years straight once you arrive in order to be able to keep your PR status and renew your PR cards.
