HIV positive in Elisa test but negative in western blot

Had the medicals done , but HIV turned out to be positive in Elisa test but negative in the confirmation test

the doctor advised that this happens to some people as Elisa may detcet any antibody which has been retained

The doctor has sent the medical docs to Ottawa with this info

Please advise whether this is okay..Would they be requesting anything else??

May be some further medicals could be asked for to confirm i.e reports in next 3 months and close to 6 months.

Check the value (number) of the result, Regularly every HIV test which results is too low they take it as a positive which is actually not, so as a protocol they do the re-test and confirm if it is positive or not. If it says negative at second test then is ok. You shouldn't have any problem.

A positive result on the ELISA screening test does not necessarily mean that the person has HIV infection. Certain conditions may lead to a false positive result, such as Lyme disease, syphilis, and lupus.

A positive ELISA test is always followed by a Western blot test. A positive Western blot confirms an HIV infection. A negative Western blot test means the ELISA test was a false positive test. The Western blot test can also be unclear, in which case more testing is done.

Negative tests do not rule out HIV infection. There is a period of time (called the "window period") between HIV infection and the appearance of anti-HIV antibodies that can be measured.

If a person might have acute or primary HIV infection, and is in the "window period," a negative HIV ELISA and Western blot will not rule out HIV infection. More tests for HIV will need to be done.

I'm not an expert, but I know that, at least for Herpes, Western Blot would be the most accurate (its results should be taken over Elisa or HerpeSelect). I think it should be the same for HIV as well. As cocknbull said, negative Western Blot would mean that your positive ELISA is false positive, so hopefully you got nothing to worry about.
