Hi everyone.

My boyfriend has hemophilia and he wants to apply for his PR in Canada. He's been in Canada for 2 years, for his studies (now he's done and is looking for a job). I was wondering if any of you knows anyone who applied for PR as an hemophiliac or knows more informations about the criteria "Applicants may be denied if... : Their admission might cause excessive demand on existing social or health services provided by the government." He is really worried about this because his disease might be a reason to get rejected.

Thank you.

Mirage

Hemophilia is expensive to treat and will most likely fall under excessive demand if he applies to immigrate on his own. If you end up sponsoring him as your spouse/common law partner (after you are either married or have lived together for a year) then excessive demand will not apply.

Do you know how much would a Factor 8 medicine cost in Canada market?
And will that be covered by insurance?

Are you asking about Humate P / Hemate P?

Last I was told a number it was somewhere around $800 a dose (this was a number of years ago so it's entirely possible that number has changed). If you fall under a provincial health care plan the cost of these treatments is entirely covered by the health care system and you don't pay a cent.

If you fall under a travel insurance / private insurance plan - then I have no idea if it's covered or not. You would have to look at the fine print of your policy and/or speak with your insurer.

Is that cost show in dollars? (i.e. $1.20)

If in dollars - then it's unfortunately massively wrong... As someone who sometimes has to take Humate P, I can confirm it's an expensive treatment. I don't know the exact cost to the Canadian health care system as of now - however I do know it's north of $500 per pop.

I think, given my research, that it's the cost per UNIT within that dosage.

Got it - that would make sense. That would put the cost for my individual doses north of $1,000.

The site is a bit confusing since the way the information is presented the cost appears to be per vial or per kit (pretty much the same difference since there is one vial in every kit).

Thanks guys!
This would be for my father, I'm planning to migrate to Canada(Toronto) in next few months, I'm planning to take my parents there on a super visa at a later point

$1000 per vile is very costly.
In my home country, we pay around 4K Indian Rupees translated to roughly less than 100 CAD.
This makes me wonder, can we ship medicine from my home country to Canada? I'm thinking if we can carry a good number of medicines with us to Canada would help also
may be we can have additional medicines shipped from my home country at a later point on need basis.
I know this sounds crazy but I hope you guys understand my concern :(
Also, I heard about few Hemophilia societies(atleast in UK) provide free medicine to patients who are in need, Is it possible in Canada if required in emergency?

You can carry medication with you on the plane for a few months of personal use. I don't know if it will be possible to ship it later. Since it's a blood product - it may not be possible. I honestly don't know.

I am not aware of free dispensation. In Canada you do not get these treatments from the Hemophilia Society. The treatments are given out directly by hospitals and that's who maintains dispensation control.

I would assume it will not be available for free. If a treatment is required in an emergency, you would go to the nearest hospital emergency room for help (they will however charge you for all services and treatments received).

Thanks a ton Scylla and +1 to you for all your help.
I just saw online and found that medicine can be transported to visitors residing in Canada on fedex canada (With conditions ofcourse) I might need to check on what those are...

Definitely check the conditions. Regular medications are one thing. Blood products may be a whole different matter...

By the way - where will you be living? Which city?
