I have a question related to tax returns and who needs to file them every year.
I was granted immigration to Canada as a skilled worker in 2016. We landed as a family in June 2017 but only stayed in Canada for 10 days and returned to the UK where I currently work.
We plan to move to Canada later this year or maybe early next year and will then settle as permanent residents. Do I need to file tax returns even though I do not live in Canada right now (although I have been issued with permanent resident cards)? I have not had any income in Canada as yet and do not even have a bank account in Canada as yet. From what I have read I am confused if I am supposed to be filing tax returns. If so, would someone please help give an overview of the process?
Please also advise what I should do as I believe I have missed the deadline to file a tax return (April 30, 2018 for 2017).
Many Thanks,
Salman
