My mother moved to the US from canada 20 years ago when she married, has since divorced. (About 10 years ago if that matters).

She lives alone in the US, and for past year has had significant decline in mental capabilities. Her doctor has ageed she should not be alone nor able to make decisions for herself.

My sister and i need to find a way to bring her back to canada and get her into a ltc but financially we need the help of ohip. Is there any compassionate programs for returning canadian citizens who need medical assistance. My mother moved to the US from canada 20 years ago when she married, has since divorced. OHIP doesnt cover LTC facilities.
You need to contact Long-term care in Ontario | ontario.ca

Ministry of Long Term Care. Bit confused with the " financially we need the help of OHIP". Your mom would need to apply for OHIP as a new resident

Adding, that your mom needs a valid OHIP card PRIOR to going down the road for LTC

There is no wait time for OHIP. Your mother would simply apply once she has returned to Canada.

Would expect that there will be a significant wait time until she gets a spot in longterm care. She will have to return to Canada and find a GP who will refer her to CCAC who will assess her needs and see if she qualifies for LTC and then she will join the wait list for longterm care homes/program she qualifies for. Sounds like she may need a dementia unit. Would expect many months when it comes to a wait list. Your mother will be responsible for paying a bed fee every month as a resident of a longterm care home. Typically you pay the majority of your government pension as a bed fee. Many others are desperately in need of LTC so there isn’t a way your mother will be able to get access quickly. I don’t think Ontario requires you to have lived in Ontario in the past X number of years to get access to a provincial longterm care bed like some other provinces but that is something you should verify with CCAC. She may have a shorter wait in the US to get into LTC. If you want her to be in a certain residence or a certain area wait times will likely be even longer. The LTC system is extremely overwhelmed. If she has the funds she can pay for a private facility until she can get accepted to a public home if not caregiving will come down to your family. Her level of need may determine what is possible. Unfortunately wouldn’t be counting on OHIP for too much. Even in the LTC home would expect to have to spend a significant time helping your mother and making sure she is cared for. Sadly the PSWs have so many patients they have limited time per patient.

CCAC = Canadian council on animal care!

Used to be called CCAC (Community Care Access Centres). Updated to Home and Community Care Support Services in 2021. Can arrange assessments in terms of what is available and put you on some lists, arrange homecare if you qualify but would not expect many hours if you get any, etc.
