Here's my situation. My fiance is born and raised in Toronto but has been in the US on a TN Visa for the past several years. We have been living together in the US for the past 9 months. He is moving back to Toronto to be near his family and I am moving with him. I am a US citizen. I'm having a really hard time finding a straight answer on the best approach to immigrating. I am applying for jobs in Toronto from the US, but when he moves I would like to move with him. I realize it would initially be on a visitor visa (do I need one as a US Citizen?) then apply for PR through either an employer or through my finance when we get married - we haven't set a date yet. Is this the right approach? I've read a few things about not being able to job hunt in Canada on a visitor visa. True? How well enforced is this? What kind of trouble can I get into if I continue applying for jobs? Any advice on the best approach to this process would be greatly appreciated. I've contacted two different agencies and am waiting to hear back. Is it worth it to hire a job placement/immigration service or are they a scam? Any help is really appreciated!

Hello,

1. You can go to the CIC website and click on the visitor section and find out if you need a visa or you are under the visa exempted country.

2. Well, when I came back the second time, the CBSA officer interviewed me briefly and kept hinting me to get married and even taught me briefly how to apply for the PR. So as for your approach, I can say in my opinion, its correct.

3. Applying for jobs doesn't equate to working. You can apply for a thousand jobs, and not get one. Obviously this is not illegal is it? Because you are not working. But be careful, even working without pay, but that job asks for a pay in normal situations, its illegal too.

4. Obviously you can job hunt in Canada as a visitor. But don't ever work or study without a legal permit/visa. You may be able to get away once or 100 times but in the end you'll get caught. So don't even try it.

5. What is the name of the agency? Apply through Adecco if you can. They are legit.

As long as you feel that someone trying to hire you is feeding you the wrong information, eg. asking you to use your fiance'w SIN and such, please don't do it. If you have to wait a long time at home, can't work, go do volunteering work or just stay home and be a temporary housewife until you're able to work.

Best of luck, mate!
