Hello,

I have 6.5 years of work experience in the IT domain. I have a BE in Electrical engineering. Unfortunately my graduation percentage isn't good ( 55 % ). I graduated in 2013.

I want to apply for a course in Canada for hopes of getting a PR someday. I am facing two problems :

1. I have 5+ years of education gap.
2. My graduation percentage is low.
3. I had 10 backlogs ( all of which are cleared)

I am aiming for project management/International business management/Business analysis. Can someone please suggest which colleges I may apply? Which all colleges may accept my profile?

Regards

Hello,

1. A gap would be considered if you graduated and then sat at home doing nothing for a few months instead of working instantly.
If you study and then right away get a job, it's not considered a gap.

2. Even my graduation percentage is low. I have 49.5% in my BCA and 60% in my MCA. But I am still trying for universities as I really want to learn. So I suggest applying for universities if you really want to study. A university education will have a higher chance of you getting a job. With 6.5 years of work experience, they will mostly likely look at your experience than your academics.

3. I am not sure about this. Most universities I have short listed ask for transcripts. Except for University of Windsor, none of the universities have a mention of backlogs on their websites.

I am not an expert but some other experts on the forum might be able to help on the second (last sentence) and third point.

I would normally avoid management related course if my background is tech to ensure logical progression. Go for masters in Computer Engineering (provided you have experience in Computers/IT) since you have experience in IT. Considering your current age, past work experience and education you would want to satisfy the visa officer why further studies are important for you at this point of time in your career.

You would wanna explain why doing an affordable masters degree from India is not an option as compared to attaining an expensive degree from Canada. Visa Officer might also be interested in knowing why you would like to leave your current job looking at the fact that you already have 6+ years of experience.

Just a tip: Make sure your intentions to immigrate are not disclosed in your Study Permit application, as looking at your age and work experience they might look at your file as potential immigrant who won't leave Canada at the end of authorized stay.

Any idea about backlogs? A friend was asking about backlogs as he had a few, all of which have been cleared in time though.

None of the universities mention anything about backlogs, I am not sure if they allow it or not.

Or just apply and hope for the best?

Thank you!! But I am not looking for a university degree right now because I aim for an MBA, for which I need to.take a GRE/GMAT. Universities which don't need GRE/GMAT may not be the best decision to invest in. That is why I am looking to apply to colleges.for a certificate course and then apply for an MBA . For personal reasons, I need to leave my job , and I feel going for higher studies is a good option. I don't have the time to.prepare.for GRE/GMAT right now. I have taken IELTS in hopes of getting through a college. Upon research, I found that most colleges don't accept students with backlogs, even though it is not explicitly mentioned in their website.

I don't have any programming background, therefore it is very difficult for me to go for technical courses in Universities. I think project management is close to what I aspire for. I don't feel I have the capacity to apply for a University right now, because any good University requires GMAT/GRE. Unfortunately, I don't have the time to.prepare for it and I need to leave my job because of personal reasons. I feel that going for a diploma certificate is the best bet I have, but I am concerned about my backlogs.

Yeah, from my personal viewpoint, after 6+ years of experience noone is actually doing the "tech" stuff. Those are some manager/team lead level position I suppose. However, visa officers normally look at it as switching careers, although if you can really explain in your SOP how you are in need of management skills and how tech+management is considered a good fit by employers and stuff then maybe you can make it.

Another thing is visa officers normally look at diploma as something not providing the student with additional skills than what he has earned from a bachelors degree and work experience in the field. You may wanna go for at least a post graduate diploma. Peronally, I've seen positive outcomes on visa applications of those who applied for masters as opposed to a diploma/pgd. So it boils down to your personal decision. Also, most of the Canadian universities do not require GRE as a prerequisite for masters.

Good luck!

Do not research on this forum alone, also consult a professional before filing your Visa to improve your chances.

Usually you can get away showing consolidated mark sheets/transcripts for admission, they will not know if you had any backlogs prior and an ECA will accentuate your GPA. Only rarely few colleges ask for individuals. However its a rule that you have the show individuals while applying for a visa where you may face some problems. Two things which matter most for admissions : how recent the degree was completed and the overall score.
