Hey everyone, I've been here in Canada for 2 years now and I'm about to graduate from a private college in Toronto. I'm graduating from a Business Administration course with a rather small private college and would like some insight on what to do now.

Some of the things I have been thinking about:

-Should I start a public college to get the PR in the future?

-I have 1 year work experience in Traffic control, as far as I know it counts as Construction Helpers ( I don't remember which NOC), Do I have a chance to immigrate with this experience?

-I got an Open work permit from my College when I applied for the visa ( It was during the start of the pandemic in 2020), can I work full-time with an open work permit while I'm doing a Co-op program? (I'm 2 weeks away from graduating and currently working as a cashier for NoFrills)

-I'm thinking about returning to my country for a short period of time (2 months maybe) to do a medical procedure due to an injury here. Can I come back to Canada while my study and work permit AND my eTA are still valid?

I am completely lost here, I have been looking through the IRCC website for months now to find the answer to my questions but I didn't get the answer yet. I thought about talking to an immigration agency here but last time they wanted me to go to a public college WITHOUT considering other options. It was really annoying the way they were trying to push me to buy a " 3 years course with guaranteed PR after 4 years in Canada"

From your experience, do you have any suggestions on what I should do now?

Thanks in advance!

It's hard to comment without knowing your full profile, including how many points you have under Express Entry and your highest level of education.

The construction helper job sounds like it would be NOC C or D and won't be of any help in allowing you to qualify for PR.

Overall I agree with whoever said that you should study at a public college or university if your goal is PR. Take a 2 year program so that you qualify for a 3 year PGWP. It's really too bad you wasted your time on a private school in Canada. But what's done is done.

I can't fathom why you spent 2 years on a degree without a plan for the future. Was getting PR not your plan all along? What other options did you think would be open for you after a 2 year diploma from a private college?

Provide more info on your profile and why you made your previous decisions, that would perhaps help us to give you more constructive advice.

Unfortunately you can't use your co-op permit if you are no longer doing co-op.

When does the special WP you got expire? Does your private college program qualify for PGWP? Are you doing a co-op?

Yes, I am doing a co-op and my visa expires in July. They are not eligible for a PGWP so that's why I'm asking for help. I've been talking to people here in Toronto and everyone makes it sound so easy. I want to know, from experience, from other people here, if you guys managed to immigrate through a public college and how it was for YOU guys.

I don't know how many points I have for the Express Entry program. I attended University back in Brazil ( 3 years of Game Development. Got a Diploma for it) and I also have work experience but people told me that doesn't count much here. English for me is not a problem. I can communicate really well without any issues.

I got here when the pandemic was starting. I tried applying for a bunch of public colleges around Toronto but most of them told me the admissions were closed and they were transitioning to a system where they could do the assessment for the students online and do the interview. I went for a private college because I came to Canada with a Visitor's Visa and had to either get into a private college to stay and work legally or go back home and come this year. Luckily I was working in my country (Brazil) for the past 6 years and had enough money saved up to come here. A private college was never the plan A but was my backup plan in case I needed to stay here and work until I figured everything out.

I don't know about you guys, but when the pandemic started I got a lot of emails and even a letter sent to me from IRCC, stating that IF I wanted to stay in Canada I would not be eligible for any sort of support from the government and they were encouraging people to leave and return in the future. They even called me asking if I would like to return and they were setting up flights for people from South America. I told them I didn't want to because I was going to get into a public college, but as I mentioned above, it didn't work well.

You should calculate how many points you have under Express Entry.
