Hello friends!

I have a master degree in economics but I didn't get a job I wanted due to the financial turmoil last year. I end up working in a small company with job duties involving marketing, graphic design, administration, operation and customer service. I do a huge volume of work but receive a very small wage around $11.5 per hour, since my employer takes advantage of me being a foreign student. And that hugely limits my job title that could be used for CEC.

I bet I could kind of put myself as a Administrative Assistant (NOC 1241). But the problem is, according to Statistics Canada, the minimum wage for the closest position I could find-Administrative Officer (NOC 1221) in Toronto region (2010-2011) is $12.

I am very concerned that the combination of the above would raise the flag (look suspicious) to Immigration Canada. But everything is genuine! What should I do?

Please give me some advice. Would be appreciated!

Hi, I have similar experience as you. My job is entry level, too. And the salary is low too. I think you have twist around your job description and let them know that your job is not very entry level. For me, I mentioned that I was a mentor for our company's SAP system. And when they called my boss for reference, he also mentioned that. So I think it depends on how you put your job description and how your company gave your reference.

Have you done medical yet? What did they ask when they called your boss?

There are some things we don't have control over and this is one of them. The only requirement I know of is that the job must be skilled i.e. fall under NOC 0, A or B. If yours is skilled and your main duties and responsibilities are consistent with that of NOC 1241, then use the code. Sometimes the job title that the employer gives you won't match the title(s) listed under the NOC code which is why "main duties and responsibilities" determine the appropriate NOC code.

The most important is duties. The salary can be low or a minimum. I asked CIC regarding this issue. But you have to have an Open work permit.
