My wife is a Canadian Citizen and we have two children who are in the process of getting their citizenship and temporary 2 year Canadian passports for our trip to Saskatchewan in May. Will it be possible for myself being a New Zealander to get a work permit and then once established in Canada to apply for spousal sponsorship? We are planning to move in November if possible. Any other suggestions out there would be greatly appreciated. I'm hoping that we can do what my wife did when immigrating here. She applied for a visitors permit, arrived and then after 2 months applied for a work permit and then we applied for PR with spousal sponsorship. We need direction on what would be the quickest way to get our family into the country altogether. Cheers, Blair

If you apply for PR outland soon, you should have your PR easily by November. Sydney is a very fast office. No work permit is needed once you have PR. As for the May trip, you can show the CBSA that you have applied for PR and you should have no problems entering the country. However, you should not make it look like you are moving to Canada until you are approved for PR.

Thank you. Just so I'm clear if we get the Spousal Sponsorship application in the next few weeks to Sydney you think I'll be approved for PR by November? Everything else I've read has indicated at least 18 months. My wife has not been approved as a sponsor yet either. Will that make any difference?

Cheers

You submit the entire application (sponsor and applicant parts together including your medical and police checks) all to CPC-Mississauga. After the sponsor approval (2 months), CIC will forward the applicant part to Sydney for applicant processing. There's a good chance it will be done by end of the year. Even if it's not, you can come to Canada as a visitor and wait out the process here.

Ignore the 18 months time posted on CIC site, it's completely useless and not reflective at all of actual processing times. Check out the Sydney thread on this site for peoples actual times.

You are not entitled to a work permit, even as spouse of a Canadian. So until you get PR you won't be able to work.

We applied through Sydney and were approved in just over 6 months, there have been a few applicants that have been done in less than that too. Sydney is one of the fastest visa offices, if you apply now, more than likely you'd be done by November.

You get it done yourself for any country you've lived in for 6 months or longer, except for Canada.

For New Zealand, that's correct. http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/information/security/police-cert/asia-pacific/new-zealand.asp

Most countries require you to get it yourself, but New Zealand has a different procedure it seems.
