Good evening everyone. I'm not familiar with the customs/immigration towards visitors from outside Canada and want to ask you guys about it.

My girlfriend is Japanese. I met her in Toronto during the summer of 2015. She came here as a visitor then later extended her stay with a work visa. We dated for a few months until January 2016. She had to go back to Japan since her work visa was up. I visited her in Tokyo this summer and our relationship has grown.

Her work contract is up in a week and she plans to visit here in Toronto this April and stay here again as long as she's permitted. She doesn't know exactly for how long but she wants to stay as long as possible. Our question now is can she get a one way ticket or would that create a problem at the customs/immigration officials? Does she have to get a round trip ticket to avoid any issues? I told her from what i know that there shouldn't be an issue but she wants me to have a second opinion.

If you ladies and gents know about this and can elaborate it would be deeply appreciated. Thank you in advance.

Jessie,

She needs a two way ticket. Airline most likely won't let her board with a one way. Also, this could cause issues at immigration since she's only allowed to visit as a tourist and not live here.

Thank you scylla.

How long can she visit/stay here as tourist? She visited/stayed here before too. Would that be an issue?

How long she is allowed to visit Canada will be determined by the CBSA officer she speaks to when she enters Canada. Most are allowed in for six months - however it's entirely possible to be given a shorter visit if the visa officer has concerns she has plans to remain in Canada long term. She should make sure she is able to show proof of funds (e.g. bank account) to demonstrate how she will pay for her vacation.

I know that its ok to visit family and friends here in toronto from japan but would it cause a problem with csba if she mention the reason of her visit here is to see me (boyfriend)?

How much money would be enough to show cbsa? And is a two way ticket the same as roundtrip?

Thanks again in advance.

CBSA will want to make sure your girlfriend leave at the end of planned stay, and will not work in Canada. They will question if she is going to stay with you longer than she is allowed. A round trip ticket and loads of money to access is a plus.

A single ticket is not an instant ban, but it raises concern of the officer and could cause further interrogation, and possibly a traveler record
